Pin Club June 2023 - Earth & Luna

Limited Edition 1.5" Hard Enamel Pin

The relationship between each planet and its moons is always a special one, but that is particularly true of Earth and the Moon. Most of the inner rocky worlds don't even have naturally occurring satellites, especially not ones so large relative to their size. The only other inner world with a moon in its orbit is Mars, and it's largely thought that Phobos and Deimos are captured asteroids, and they are comparatively much, much smaller. In fact, the only other place in the solar system where you can find moons as big are our own is around the massive gas giants of the outer planets like Jupiter and Neptune.

The Moon is such a significant part of our planetary system that someone could argue that we were a binary planet system instead of a planet with a moon, and that wouldn't entirely be wrong.

But did you know that every year the moon drifts about an inch and a half further away? That doesn't seem like much, but it adds up over time. Which also means if you went back into the past, the moon would be a bit closer and the world would be spinning just a little bit faster. But as the moon gets further away, the days get just a little bit longer, so technically there's a distant future out there where we'll have 48-hour-long days.
