The Space Shuttle is a reusable low Earth orbiting vehicle that was in operation from 1981-2011. There were a total of 6 orbital vehicles (OV) created during the course of the program. The first, (Enterprise) was not space-worthy and was only used as a test vehicle for approach and landings. The fully operational vehicles were known as Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavor, which flew for a total of 135 missions.
Two of these vehicles were lost in tragedy. Challenger during the launch of it's 10th mission, on January 28, 1986, and Columbia upon reentry on it's 28th mission on February 1, 2003. The remaining three are now on display at various science centers across the country.
